Its October 1942. "Helmuth steps across the bare floor to the corner. Raises his smock, urinates in the slop bucket. For a moment, the cell grows thick with the stick from the bucket, and then thins, becomes ordinary again". Helmuth is raised to believe in the "fatherland" he is taught by Hugo, his step father, that Hitler is the greatest thing that ever happened to Germany. Suddenly his oldest brother, Gerhard, comes back from his first deployment fighting for the Nazi regime with a radio that has stations giving reports from all countries during war time. Helmuth and some other friends find out that the British's reports are telling the truth and the Nazis are lying to them. What would you do if your older brother bought home a secret radio and told you not to touch it? would you rise and become a hero? Or do you forget about it and join the army and fight for your fatherland like you were raised to do? Or follow your destiny or stick up for what you believe in?
